The Mediterranean Diet Plan – Lose Weight The Healthy And Delicious Way
The Mediterranean Diet plan is based on the natural eating habits of Italy, Greece, and Crete. It is interesting that the health rate of these countries has far outstripped the rest of the world. Why?
To answer that question, let’s take a look at the history, content, benefits of the diet, how it translates into a good diet plan for weight loss, and some suggested resources. We will also consider the traditional Mediterranean way of life, which had a lot to do with their fitness, great health and very low disease rate.
The History Of The Mediterranean Diet
The history of this diet is steeped in Italian and Grecian culinary tradition. In other words, we will be looking at their traditional way of eating, not their modern way.
It’s sad to say, but these countries are falling from their healthy traditional way of eating and living, to embrace the more convenient and unhealthy modern way. So let’s stick to the traditional Mediterranean diet plan and way of life.
So why was their diet, eating habits, and way of life so healthy?
- They farmed the land
- They ate what was farmed according to season
- Therefore they ate a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables
- They cooked with locally made extra virgin olive oil instead of unhealthy fats and oils
- They ate low-fat pasta and fresh bread (not slathered with butter)
- They ate very little read meat
- They ate locally caught fresh fish
- They enjoyed a little homemade wine with their dinner
- Their deserts consisted mostly of fresh fruit and very seldom of sugar
- They ate slowly and enjoyed their meals with the whole family at the table (their meals often lasted hours with them eating slowly, laughing, and talking)
- They didn’t sit around and watch TV
- They walked everywhere
- They all worked and got plenty of natural exercise
- They were outdoors a lot
- They were very social people, who believed in helping each other
- They had strong family units
- They had strong faith
The people living in the Mediterranean area practiced the Mediterranean Diet and life style without thinking about it. It was their way of life.
The anxiety and stress caused by broken families and the lack of social support and peace from faith have a huge effect on a person’s eating habits and health. People with inner stability, peace, and security are a lot healthier than those without. So, to give you a true complete picture of why they were so healthy, I must include those important ingredients, which are a part of their history.
Still, the Mediterranean diet plan plays the largest part in their longevity and health.
The Study That Woke Up The Western World
The nutritionist, Ansel Keys, who created the “K-rations” for American soldiers in World War II, really discovered the Mediterranean diet plan for us. While in Crete, he noticed that the people who ate the traditional Cretan (Mediterranean) diet had:
- A much lower cancer rate than the rest Western world
- A much lower rate of hearth disease than the Western world
- A lot of people who lived longer and healthier than the Western world
So, Mr. Keys did a 15-year study on the Mediterranean diet compared to the diets of other countries. The Mediterranean diet won out with far greater success than the others. Those living the traditional Mediterranean way were by far healthier, more fit, and lived longer.
There were other studies done also with the same results.
