Fasting for weight loss is simple...just stop eating and lose weight fast. No more searching for good diet plans or quick weight loss programs; just go on a fast. What could be easier?

It does sound great. It doesn’t cost you anything, no calorie counting, no shopping for low calorie foods, no trying to figure out what to eat every day, and no programs to join. Geez, you don’t have to do anything except to watch the fat melt away.

Yes, fasting to lose weight is a very simple way to lose weight, but if it’s not done properly, you can run into some real problems. The biggest problems happen when people use long-term fasting for their weight loss program.

But there is a right way to do it safely. (Hint: think short-term intermittent fasting.)

Farther down this page, I explain more about fasting for weight loss the proper way, but for now, let’s learn a little more about fasting in general.

What Is Fasting?

Fasting is the denial of food and/or drink for a long or short period of time. Actually, there are a lot of different fasts you can do.

  • The full fast (no food and sometimes no food or drink)

  • The partial fast (doing without certain foods)

  • Liquid fast (drinking only various kinds of liquid for nourishment)

  • The long-term fast (fasting for more than 24 hours)

  • The Short-term fast (fasting for 24 hours or less)

  • Intermittent short-term fasting (fasting, stopping, fasting...very effective, easy and inexpensive. Must be done correctly. We’ll talk more about this powerful approach later)

Most people who consider fasting for weight loss would like to see the weight go quickly. As a result, they usually jump right into a full long-term fast. Please don’t do this; it’s the wrong approach for healthy and lasting weight loss.

Consider the following.

Is Fasting For Weight Loss Good For Rapid Weight Loss?

Here are the facts. You can achieve rapid weight loss by fasting, but if you do it wrong, you can also lose your health, muscle tissue, hair, etc. If you do it correctly, it can be the greatest method for fast weight loss you can imagine and it can change your life and health for the better.

There are a lot of reasons for fasting, besides fast weight loss. Some people fast for spiritual reasons. But when it comes to doing a full long-term fast for weight loss, that’s just not a good way to go. A full, long-term fast is not a good tool for healthy and lasting weight loss...and if it isn’t going to be lasting, then why do it?

Personally, from my experiences, and what I have read, full long-term fasts should not be done on a regular basis and when it is done, it should be done for reasons other than to lose weight. However, intermittent short-term fasts...that’s a different story.

Full Long-Term Fasts - The Good And The Bad

Okay, let’s take a look at the good points of a full, long-term fast, for those who are healthy enough to try it:

  • It’s inexpensive

  • You lose weight fast

  • Your body gets detoxified

  • Your taste buds get revived

  • You develop self control that can be used over bad habits

  • Allergies may calm down and sometime stop

  • It sometimes helps with arthritis and other inflammatory diseases

  • It can clear the skin and brighten the eyes

  • It sometimes normalizes blood pressure

  • It can help you to be more spiritually aware (probably the best reason for a long-term fast)

Okay, now let’s look at some possible and probable bad points of a full long-term fast:

  • After a fast, it is very easy to gain your weight back

  • The body can begin to use its own muscles and organs for food

  • Your metabolism slows down, which can causes weight gain when you are done fasting

  • You can become malnourished and, thus, cause damage to your health

  • If you are diabetic, fasting could be a disaster...see your doctor first

  • Many people experience light-headedness

  • You probably will experience fatigue

  • You may get abnormal hearth rhythms

  • You will most likely have bad breath, especially during the early stages when you are detoxifying the most

  • You most likely will get muscle aches

  • You may have a season of nausea

  • If you don’t stop at the proper time, you will starve your body and cause it damage.

  • You can easily develop vitamin deficiencies

  • You can develop muscle breakdown

  • You can develop blood-sugar problems

  • You can weaken your bodies ability to fight infections and inflammation

  • You can upset your bodies balance of potassium and sodium

  • Etc.

I hope you can see why I strongly discourage long-term complete fasting for weight loss. Please, if you do decide to do a full long-term fast anyway, see a Physician first.

There is a better way.

Short-Term Intermittent Fasting For Long-Term Healthy Weight Loss

Now for the good news. You can lose a lot of weight safely through short-term intermittent fasting and you can lose it a lot faster than on a normal diet.

Believe me, you can lose a lot of weight safely in a short amount of time if you do a partial fast properly. But what is the proper way to do it?

First of all, I must tell you that the intermittent fasting for weight loss concept did not originate with me. So I want to give credit where credit is due.
